UnblockPiP Help

UnblockPiP – Help & Instructions

What UnblockPiP does
UnblockPiP makes video on the web behave like a native iOS video:
  • Picture in Picture (PiP) so you can keep watching while using other apps.
  • Background playback so audio keeps playing even when Safari is not in front.
  • Detach Video button that floats over the page and lets you pop any video into PiP.

1. Enabling the UnblockPiP Safari extension (iPhone / iPad)

  1. Open Safari on your iPhone or iPad.
  1. Go to any webpage with a video (for example, YouTube).
  1. Tap the Page Menu button in the bottom bar
  • It looks like three horizontal lines in a circle.
  1. Tap “Manage Extensions.
  1. Find “UnblockPiP” in the list and turn it ON.
  1. If Safari asks for permission, tap Allow so UnblockPiP can work on the sites you visit.
Once enabled, you don’t need to repeat these steps again on the same device.

2. Using the Detach Video button

After you enable the extension:
  1. Start playing any video on a supported website.
  1. When a video is visible and active, UnblockPiP shows a small “Detach Video” pill near the video.
  1. Tap Detach Video:
  • The video enters Picture in Picture.
  • You can move and resize the PiP window while using other apps.
  1. Tap the Detach toggle in the UnblockPiP popup to turn the Detach Video button on or off globally.
If you don’t see the Detach button right away, scroll the page or interact with the video once (play/pause or tap on it) and it should appear.

3. Resetting site preferences

If a particular site is behaving strangely (wrong player, overlays, etc.):
  1. Open the UnblockPiP popup from your browser’s toolbar.
  1. Click “Reset site preferences.
  1. Reload the page and try playing the video again.
This clears per‑site tweaks for that domain and reapplies the default settings.

4. Tips & troubleshooting

  • No “Detach Video” button appears
  • Make sure the UnblockPiP extension is enabled in Safari’s extension settings.
  • Confirm that “Detach Video Button is toggled ON in the popup.
  • Ensure there is actually a video element visible on the page (some sites hide videos inside iframes that can’t be controlled).
  • PiP option is greyed out or not available
  • Some websites or system restrictions may limit PiP.
  • Try updating iOS/iPadOS and Safari to the latest version.
  • Video pauses when you leave Safari
  • On supported sites (like YouTube and Twitch), UnblockPiP tries to keep playback running when the page is no longer visible.
  • If a site aggressively pauses playback anyway, it may not be fully bypassable.

5. Privacy

UnblockPiP:
  • Does not log your browsing history.
  • Stores only minimal per‑site settings (like whether the detach button is enabled) in your browser’s local storage.
  • Does not send your video URLs or playback information to external servers.
For more details, see the App Privacy Policy linked elsewhere on this blog.
